With today’s slate of matches in the books, let’s take a look at two quality clubs that were carved up like Jack O’Lanterns by bottom feeders.
Liverpool
Newcastle seemed outmatched heading into the game against a far more talented Liverpool squad. That theme did not seem to distract the Magpies, however, as they took all three points with a late goal and an impressive 1-0 victory at St. James’ Park.
Liverpool may have had the edge in time of possession, but the shots favored Newcastle. Mario Balotelli played the lone striker position and was held in check throughout the match. Barcelona
After a loss to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu last weekend, their supporters expected a rebound game against Celta Vigo back home at Camp Nou. In front of their fans at home, los blaugranas had a stinker and were shut out in a loss to Los Celticos, 1-0. With Barca having percent of ball possession and taking 19 shots—9 on frame—Celta walked away with all three points. With a starting striker corp of Messi, Neymar and Suarez, Pedro was added as a fourth striker midway through the second half, but to no avail. Barca was carved up by the lowly visitors and fell out of the top spot in La Liga. If a picture is worth a thousand words, looking at Luis Suarez after the game said it all.
