Sad fan index, week five

One of the best things about college football is the passion fans have for their team, their university and their players. Of course, being so passionate about something also means that from time to time you get your heart broken.

On gameday, Twitter is an amazing way to follow the ups and downs of college football, and with that, we bring you the five fan bases that had the most to be sad about this past weekend…

1. Michigan Wolverines

After going 11-2 in his debut season in Ann Arbor, Brady Hoke has seen diminishing returns every season. With a two-game losing streak and the team’s only wins coming against Appalachian State and Miami (OH), the downward trend is continuing this season. This weekend, Michigan got rolled in its own stadium by Minnesota. For the first time in its history, the Wolverines have three losses before October. This performance not only left the fans sad, but left prominent blogs calling for a changing of the guard:

2. South Carolina Gamecocks

Steve Spurrier always makes sure he gives the Georgia Bulldogs his best shot, but after that game his team has a tendency to lose a game or two that it shouldn’t, a game that costs the Gamecocks the division. On Saturday, they led Missouri by 13 halfway through the fourth quarter and couldn’t hold on. This caused much anger and sadness from the fans and disbelief from former players:

3. Arkansas Razorbacks

It is clear the Arkansas Razorbacks are a much improved team this season. They took it to Texas A&M on Saturday and had a 14-point lead heading into the fourth quarter before blowing the lead and losing in overtime. Better days are clearly ahead of the Razorbacks, but they have still not won a conference game since October 13, 2012. Games like this are the true heartbreakers:

4. Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State seemed to be on top of the world under new head coach James Franklin. The Nittany Lions had managed to burst out to an early 4-0 record and faced a game at home against a Northwestern team that had already endured two losses on the season. That’s why they play the games.

Penn State managed just 266 yards of total offense and was controlled from the beginning to the end by the Wildcats:

5. Pittsburgh Panthers

The Panthers started out 3-0 with a good win at Boston College on their resume. The last two weeks have brought Panthers fans crashing back down to earth, however, as their team lost to Iowa by four (after having a 10-point lead at the half). This past weekend, the Panthers lost to Akron. Yep, Akron:
