Mike Davis could miss Gamecocks opener?

Earlier today South Carolina star running back Mike Davis was named to the All-SEC coaches first team alongside Todd Gurley…

Unfortunately for the Gamecocks and Davis, the news is not all good coming out of Columbia. In fact, Gogamecocks.com is reporting that Davis is questionable for the season opener against Texas A&M.

Odds are that Davis will play but this has to be concerning for South Carolina. As a sophomore Davis was a dynamic part of the offense and with Connor Shaw moving on, Davis was expected to be even more of a focal part of the offense. The Gamecocks do have experience in Shon Carson (256 yds, 4.2 ypc, 1 TD in 2013) and Brandon Wilds (221 yds, 5.1 ypc, 3 TD in 2013) but they haven’t shown themselves to be the difference maker that Davis can be.

If the Gamecocks were easing themselves into the 2014 season, like say Florida, this wouldn’t be a problem. But, the Gamecocks have one of the toughest opening schedules in the Nation (vs A&M, vs ECU, vs Georgia) and not having Davis at 100% could significantly hurt South Carolina’s chances of getting to Atlanta (and possibly more) at the end of the season.
