Matt Schaub Likely To Miss Significant Time

In his Monday presser, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak dropped a bombshell that gave any Texans fan that familiar sinking feeling in the pit of their stomachs. Starting quarterback, Matt Schaub, will miss “some time” with what Kubiak calls a “significant foot injury.”

Now, before you start scrambling to find out who the next man up is in Houston, I’ll save you some time. The news means that Matt Leinart. While Leinart is what I would describe as a “capable” backup, he’s certainly not Matt Schaub, and the Texans will likely rely even more heavily on Arian Foster for offensive production.

The news gives new life for the Tennessee Titans and even the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both of those teams are chasing the Texans, and they’ve both already lost once to the Texans this season. Here’s how the AFC South stacks up right now:

The Texans are going into their bye week, and they’ll play the Jaguars in week 12. They follow that game by playing the Falcons and the Bengals. Suddenly, the Texans are in a position where they could very possibly lose 2 of their next 3 games, making them just 8-5. Meanwhile, the Titans play the Falcons, Buccaneers, and the Bills in their next 3 games, all of which are winnable games. It’s not inconceivable that the Titans could be 8-4 with the Texans also being 8-4 after the next 3 weeks. It’s also noteworthy that the Titans play the Texans in week 17. It’s possible that Schaub could be back by then, and that could also become a winner-take-all game.
