According to the Jacksonville Jaguars, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton sustained an eye injury in an “incident” early Sunday morning. The injury required surgery on Sunday, and according to Tania Ganguli, Knighton has been released from the hospital and is at home. He has a doctor appointment tomorrow.
The extent of the eye injury still remains unknown, and we can only speculate on the effects it will have as the Jaguars move forward. Eye injuries are always serious, and any permanent damage to the eye can severely limit a player’s potential on the field.
As of now, we can only go off of the statement the Jaguars released:
“Terrance Knighton was involved in an incident early Sunday morning in which he sustained an eye injury. He has undergone surgery at Baptist Medical Center and is recovering. We are in the process of gathering information about what happened and are not able to further comment at this time. Our concern and our focus is on Terrance and his health and recovery.”
The statement doesn’t give us much to work with, but the timing could not have been any worse for Knighton or the Jaguars. Knighton is entering a contract season, and he’s trying to clean up the idea that he’s not willing to work to be a great defensive tackle. Following last year’s lockout, Knighton came into camp overweight, and he has expressed his commitment to staying in shape since the season ended. By all accounts, he has succeeded on that front, but now he may have to fight the idea that he can’t stay out of trouble too.
