Schefter: Saints head coach Sean Payton suspended for season over Bountygate

 

Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinately, according to a story on NFL.com.

Adam Schefter wins the scoop for breaking the news about the NFL’s long-expected sanctions abainst the New Orleans Saints organization for the bounties for injuries scandal. The league expected to announce the entire program today, but deferred news about the players at the requestion of the NFL Players Association. The labor union is running its own investigation that involved as many as 22 Saints players.

The NFL’s ruling allows the Saints to continue critical offseason activity by delaying Loomis’ suspension until the first game of the season. The Saints are negotiating the return of QB Drew Brees and other free agents. The front office is preparing for the 2012 NFL Draft.

Coach Payton’s suspension begins April 1. 

Saints’ assistant head coach Joe Vitt will be suspended for the first six games and has been fined $100,000.
