Super Bowl History, By The Numbers

Since the Super Bowl is identified by large Roman Numerals, clearly there is an emphasis on not just the game but the number or numbers surrounding it. Here’s a few that stand out from the rest and a few others that merit mentioning.

0: Number of punt return touchdowns in Super Bowl history. Also the number of overtime games in Super Bowl history.

1: Number of Super Bowl wins per Manning brother… though that could change soon.

2: Dwight Smith of Tampa Bay is the only player to return two interceptions for touchdowns (XXXVII)

3: The three points by the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI vs. the Dallas Cowboys still stands as the fewest ever scored by a Super Bowl team.

5: Charles Haley (San Francisco and Dallas) is the only player in history with five Super Bowl rings.

6: Mike Lodish played in six Super Bowls, more than any other player, for the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos. He won two.

8: Most career interceptions by Denver’s John Elway. Also the total number of kickoff returns for touchdown in Super Bowl history.

11: Career Super Bowl touchdown passes by Joe Montana. Also the number of most receptions in a single game, held by four players including two who are playing this Sunday – New England’s Deion Branch (XXXIX) and Wes Welker (XLII).

18: Most points ever scored in a single Super Bowl, held by RB Roger Craig (XIX), WR Jerry Rice (XXIV and XXIX), RB Ricky Watters (XXIX) and RB Terrell Davis (XXXII).

24: Wins by the NFC in the Super Bowl (including NFL teams prior to the merger with the AFL).

32: Most passes completed in a game by New England’s Tom Brady (XXXVIII) and New Orleans’ Drew Brees (XLIV).

33: Most career pass receptions by San Francisco’s Jerry Rice.

45: Longest punt return by San Francisco’s John Taylor (XXIII).

48: Jerry Rice has scored the most career points scored in Super Bowl history.

55: Most points scored by a Super Bowl team – San Francisco vs. Denver (XXIV).

70: Highest career completion percentage all time by Dallas’ Troy Aikman. Brady is fourth, with 64.5% completed.

75: Longest run from scrimmage by Pittsburgh’s Willie Parker vs. Seattle (XL).

85: Longest pass completion. Carolina’s Jake Delhomme to Mushin Muhammad in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

99: Longest kickoff return by Green Bay’s Desmond Howard (XXXI).

100: Most passes completed in a career by New England’s Tom Brady.

204: Most rushing yards in a game by Washington’s Timmy Smith (XXII).

354: Most rushing yards in a Super Bowl career by Pittsburgh’s Franco Harris.

414: Kurt Warner passed for this many yards, leading the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV win over the Tennessee Titans. That is first place all time. Want to know who owns second and third place? Kurt Warner with 377 in Super Bowl XLIII and 365 in Super Bowl XXXVI.

103,985: Largest attendance, Super Bowl XIV at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.  Sorry Jerry…
