Ndamukong Suh will never learn. That much is apparent.
After the NFL slammed the Lions defensive lineman with a $100,000 fine, Suh fired back with some rhetoric that should, at the very least, get the NFL’s attention.
“Really you just play football, that’s all I can do,” Suh said via NFL.com. “…I don’t change, I’m going to always play tough, hard, that’s the way I was brought up at Nebraska, where I really learned football from the Pelinis and that staff and continue to play hard, play blue-collar football.”
The NFL uses fines to attempt to stop unsound play, but as has been shown in the past, it doesn’t work. Even so, it’s still surprising to see an NFL player be so candid.
The problem, at least for Suh and the Lions, is the NFL knows now that fines simply won’t work with some players. The next step, now that it’s apparent fines have no effect on Suh, is suspension. Considering Suh’s past, there’s a high possibility there will be another illegal hit by Suh in the not-so-distant future.
When that hit does occur, and trust me, it will, the NFL will be in a tough position. Fines greater than $100,000 would begin to get ludicrous, but suspensions may be too extreme for the severity of the hit. At that point, the NFL will have to choose between a hard line and a soft stance.
Chances are, considering Suh’s record and Roger Goodell’s history, the NFL will put the hammer down and suspend Suh, unless, of course, Ndamukong Suh has a change of heart. Not likely.
