Before Russell Wilson came out of nowhere, Matt Flynn was supposed to be the Seahawks' starting quarterback. Before the season started, however, it was Wilson, not Flynn that was named the Seahawks' starting quarterback, and it was without question the right move. Now, however, the Seahawks have a very expensive backup quarterback that could be trade ammunition in the offseason.
The Seahawks realize that they're sitting on a potential starting quarterback, and they're open to a trade, per KIRO-AM in Seattle, general manager John Schneider said, "I'd be lying to you if I told you that we wouldn't be listening to people. I think we all believe he's a starter in this league, but we structure ourselves in a salary-cap manner where we're in a very good position with him. Having two quarterbacks like that is pretty special. We're going to do what's best for the organization — period."
Flynn will make $2 million in guaranteed money next season. Although it's not necessarily a bank busting salary, that's $2 million to sit on a bench, playing in very seldom situations. It's a lot of money for a backup quarterback that may or may not play.
There are a number of teams that will be looking for a quarterback this offseason. The market should be strong for the Seahawks and Flynn, especially considering the perceived lack of top end talent at the position in the draft. In other words, if there was ever a time to unload Matt Flynn, that time is now.
