With nothing better to do in the offseason than to stand around, kicking tires and shooting the breeze, it's no wonder that Tom Coughlin's age has come up as a talking point. Specifically, when will Coughlin decide his time to retire has come?
According to Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas, Coughlin has "one more [year] in him." Thomas made the statement on the NFL Network's "NFL AM" show. Usually, when a player makes that sort of statement, the speculation begins in earnest, but that's just not Tom Coughlin's style.
Coughlin met with media earlier today in Indianapolis, the site of the NFL Combine, and he naturally fielded questions about his future as the Giants' head coach.
I don’t even know how a young man would come to that statement,” Coughlin said, via the "New York Post". “I approach each year the way I’ve always approached them. The energy’s flowing good. I’m excited about it, and I’m looking forward to this offseason and getting our football team together again. Maybe at some point, I’ll get the message. But it certainly isn’t right now.
Coughlin will be 67 years old by the time games are being played next September. He's an old-school coach that usually gets the best out of his players. He's been on the hot seat a couple of different times in New York, and he's been able to relieve that tension by delivering a pair of Super Bowl victories to the franchise. The fact of the matter is that if Tom Coughlin wants to stick around for the full length of his contract, no one will object, and that's what it appears he intends to do.
