Tim Tebow has reportedly landed another job, staying within the NFC East to join Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, and the fit might be better than ideal.
In New England, there's no doubt who the starting quarterback is. No controversy this offseason or any offseason to come.
In New England, Bill Belichick has a firm grip on a veteran dressing room. Remember all of those unnamed sources using Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News to vent in New York, causing havoc in the Jets locker room? Don't expect anything like that this time around. The Patriots — Spygate notwithstanding — are remarkably good at avoiding controversy. Belichick undoubtedly ran this move by his core veteran contributors first and I'd imagine they feel the potential reward is worth the risk.
And finally, in New England, there'll be a slew of opportunities for Tebow to get involved offensively. The Patriots set trends. They no doubt have a lot of things in mind for a remarkable athlete like Tebow.
Expect him to finally begin making that transition to tight end. I know Tebow has been stubborn about playing quarterback, but if he had to decide between playing tight end and not playing football at all, I'd hope he'd go with the former. That is probably a factor here, because with Rob Gronkowski dealing with all sorts of injury issues and Aaron Hernandez lacking in durability, Tebow makes a lot of sense as a tight end in Foxboro.
Whether he gets special snaps at quarterback (although removing Tom Brady from the field, even for one play, seems silly) or running back remains to be seen, but I'd expect the Pats to implement packages that involve Tebow lining up in all sorts of spots, including quarterback. ESPN's Ed Werder reports that they've "signed him with the intent of playing quarterback," but that doesn't mean he can't also play elsewhere.
If that's the case, everyone is better off, including Tebow, who has hopefully finally realized that he's not cut out to be a starting NFL signal caller but does possess the ability to be a quality NFL contributor.
