Cincinnati Bengals could look at signing WR Reggie Wayne

The Cincinnati Bengals are in need of some help at the wide receiver position, especially after hearing that James Wright will miss the entire 2015 season. It hasn’t been a good offseason for the Bengals at the position, and they could look to bring in another receiver. According to ESPN’s Coley Harvey, Reggie Wayne could very well be a player of interest for the Bengals.

Wayne has made it clear that he is interested in playing during the 2015 season, but wants to find the right situation. He’d like to sign with a team that gives him the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl while also having a sizable role with the team. Cincinnati can offer him a sizable role, but they aren’t considered to be one of the favorites to make the Super Bowl.

During the 2014 season with the Indianapolis Colts, Wayne showed that he still has some good football left in the tank. He ended up catching 64 passes for 779 yards and two touchdowns on the season, despite struggling through some nagging injury issues.

At 36 years old, Wayne would likely only sign a one-year contract with the Bengals. There is a chance that he’d be interested in playing another season after 2015, but that will all depend on how the season goes. Keeping things year-to-yer is likely how he will play it, although the Bengals certainly seem like a reasonable fit for him.

Even though the Bengals seem like a good fit, making the switch from having Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck to Andy Dalton would be a depressing move for Wayne. Dalton has not shown throughout his entire career to this point that he is able to be a playoff caliber quarterback. Cincinnati will have to make a decision on his future after this year if he isn’t able to bring them a playoff win.

There are other options that the Bengals could look at, but adding a veteran presence like Wayne for their locker room would be a big pickup as well.

Expect to hear the Bengals show interest in signing Wayne, but it will all depend on whether or not he is interested in joining Cincinnati. If he’s mainly looking for championship contention, they are not the fit for him. That being said, they can offer him a bigger role than any of the main title contenders can at this point in time.
