This weekend in NFL stupid, feat. the Miami Dolphins

This year on This weekend in NFL stupid, we’re focusing on one extremely stupid winner with an honorable mention or two on a weekly basis. To close out Week 4 of the 2015 regular season, we look back on another disappointing performance from the league’s most disappointing team.

The winner: Miami Dolphins

This goes to 1-3 Miami for its decision to give Ndamukong Suh a six-year, $114 million contract in the offseason, selling its soul in free agency. That rarely pays off, and Suh is a big reason why Joe Philbin is out of a job as the Dolphins try to pick up the pieces on the first quarter of their 2015 season.

Suh has yet to record a sack this season, he’s been accused of freelancing in the face of the team’s defensive game plans and he continues to kick people in the head.

Check out his effort (or lack thereof) on this 17-yard Chris Ivory run Sunday morning in London:

Dude gets manhandled and then puts on a light jog as Ivory sprints away.

The Dolphins are a mess, and their decision to overpay Suh in the offseason is a big factor.

Runner-up 1: Oakland’s defense

For forgetting to cover Bears tight end Martellus Bennett on a touchdown that might have been the difference between a win and a loss…

Runner-up 2: Browns cornerback Tramon Williams

I understand that you’re going all out for the block on a game-winning field-goal attempt from 39 yards, but you simply can’t afford to go offside…

Runner-up 3: Mike Tomlin, Todd Haley and the Steelers offense

Pittsburgh has a star running back in Le’Veon Bell, and Bell had 129 yards on 22 carries Thursday night against Baltimore. He failed to gain yardage on only one of those carries, and that came on his first touch of the game back in the first quarter. On 3rd or 4th down and with two or fewer yards to go last season, he picked up first downs on 11 of his 13 carries.

And yet when the Steelers faced 4th-and-2 and a 4th-and-1 on separate occasions in overtime Thursday, they decided not to use Bell. And on both occasions, they failed to convert. Stupid, and possibly the difference between a win and a loss.
