MAKO Medical has officially been named the 2020 Camping World Maui Invitational testing partner. KemperLesnik, the tournament organizers, made the landmark announcement this week. This year’s tournament will take place in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville between November 30 and December 2 due to restrictions caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The tournament organizers, along with stakeholders, decided to change the location of the event based on the new NCAA-adjusted schedule. Event stakeholders include NCAA, County of Maui, Hawaii State Health Officials, Chaminade University Officials, and the participating schools. The purpose of the move is to avoid any potential health and safety issues for both fans and the sporting event’s participants.

Partnership With MAKO Medical

To keep everyone involved safe, the Buncombe County Health and Human Services and local hotels, in partnership with MAKO Medical, will create a “Maui Bubble.” The support bubble will be in the Asheville area and help reduce the risk and spread of the COVID-19 virus. The central idea is that this approach will protect all of the participating teams, staff in the hospitality venues, and nearby residents during the event.

Under the leadership of CEO Chad Price, MAKO Medical has completely transformed its laboratory services in response to the pandemic. The company now provides leading COVID-19 testing services and has administered more than two million tests in more than 20 states since the initial outbreak. To make all of this possible, MAKO Medical has partnered with medical providers, employers, and governments. The ability to turn around test results both quickly and accurately has been invaluable during the pandemic.

To ensure that everyone involved in the 2020 Camping World Maui Invitational remains safe, the tournament organizers have released a new health and safety protocol. As part of this protocol, MAKO Medical will provide precise daily polymerase chain reaction (PCR) COVID-19 tests to the teams, staff, and partners in the support bubble. The leading medical company regularly sponsors and partners with sporting events in the region.

“We’re proud to partner with the Camping World Maui Invitational as the official COVID-19 testing partner,” says Price. “Our rapid testing is utilized by over 20 state governments to provide fast and accurate results. Due to the tournament’s needs for a quick turnaround, MAKO Medical is a perfect fit.”

The 2020 Camping World Maui Invitation is already set to be one of the most exciting tournaments of the year. Participants in the much-anticipated sporting event will include the University of Alabama, Davidson College, Indiana University, the University of North Carolina, the University of Texas, Stanford, Providence College, and UNLV.

“The Maui Invitational has always been about the best of college basketball,” says Dave Odom, tournament chairman for the Camping World Maui Invitational. “While we’re faced with a unique year, we’re grateful to be able to continue to put on a premier event that sets the tone for the college basketball season.”

Needless to say, in the lead up to the sporting event, the organizers are working closely with local and state authorities to operate within mass gathering guidelines. Those responsible for hosting the event will ensure that it is in accordance with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services rules at all times.

Things will look different for this particular tournament. Due to the ongoing restrictions in response to COVID-19, no fans will be allowed in the arena to watch the tournament. Those who have All-Tournament or Booster Travel Package tickets have already been fully refunded for their original purchases. Looking to the future, the Maui Invitational and their sponsor, Maui Jim, hope to return to the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui in 2021.
