Ryan Malone gets second chance

It’s been an arduous journey filled with more questions than answers, but Ryan Malone is getting another chance.

On Monday, Malone joined a handful of New York Rangers at their practice facility for a skate. At 34-years-old, Malone doesn’t have a contract or a tryout but his agent and General Manager Glen Sather will discuss something early this week, according to the New York Post.

Back in April, Malone was arrested for DUI and possession of cocaine. The Tampa Bay Lightning used their second compliance buyout on him in June. He pleaded no contest last month to the DUI charge and the cocaine charge will be dismissed.

Malone was invited to join the Rangers in New York as training camps open this week after a skate with Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh in Minnesota. He’s currently in Stage Two of the NHL/PA’s Substance Abuse/Behavioral Health Program and has been reinstated by doctors. That means in the free and clear to sign a contract should he be offered one.

“The hockey world’s a small world,” he said. “My teammates and family know what type of person I am, so I’m just trying to let everybody else know that eventually.”

Everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance to correct them. Let’s hope Malone makes the most of that second chance.
