Stamkos happy in Tampa; favorited tweet nothing but an accident

Technology can be a really cool thing.

You can find out literally anything you want in the click of a mouse, play games and communicate with friends a continent away via your smart phone, and a million other things. But sometimes technology can be the cause of a really stupid, pointless discussion.

And Steven Stamkos found out all about those stupid discussions with the accidental favorite of a tweet.

The Tampa Bay Lightning center, one of the superstars and faces of the NHL, caused a bit of a storm on Twitter recently by favoriting a tweet about a story asking what it would take to get Stamkos to play for his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs.

Naturally, because the internet is a place of overreaction and Toronto is the kind of hockey town that thinks they are serious contenders to land anyone they want at any time, the speculation boomed about just whether or not the Lighting star would want to wear the blue and white of Leaf country.

To the surprise of no one, Stamkos is happy in Tampa, a team expected to be a major contender in the East this year. As he told Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune, his favorite was a mere accident; a slip of the finger that anyone who uses Twitter knows all too well.

“You talk about having a pocket dial, that was a pocket favorite of a tweet,” Stamkos said. “…You press the favorite button by accident and an hour later Twitter blew up. But you live and learn and I’ll be more careful on the favorite button the next time around.”

He did pick a good time to make that mistake, though, as the dog days of summer can make hockey talk a bit scarce. So thanks, Stammer, for giving the internet something to speculate over for at least a little while.

Expect the 24-year-old Stamkos’ Twitter follower count to grow this year as he rebounds from a leg injury that limited him to just 37 games last year. He’s expected to rejoin the ranks of the elite once again and will battle Alex Ovechkin for the crown of undisputed goal scoring king.

Just be more careful about what you favorite, Steven. The internet can’t handle rumors of that magnitude.
