2015 Slammy Awards Review

And the Slammy goes to…

The now annual Slammy Awards event has come and gone and with it came more award controversy. Nothing this year garnered as big a negative response as Roman Reigns winning the Superstar of the Year award for some reason last year, but some question marks came about.

We’ll take a look at each of the Slammy winners announced on Raw – first though let’s focus on the matches. The best takeaway from Raw was that the League of Nations continue to look more and more like a faction than just a group of guys. All members of the group were present for each of the three matches involving their men. The next step is something to show that they are a faction – easy answer being a T-Shirt.

Good to see the reaction that Roman Reigns got on his first Raw as champion. Not only that, but he had a solid confrontation with Stephanie McMahon where he seemed to have the crowd with him throughout the entire segment. The fans are finally getting behind Reigns as a top star – as they should. He is more than just another member of a famous family and it’s about time that those that seem to be booing him just because they think they have to realize it.

No surprise that the match of the night was Kevin Owens defeating Dolph Ziggler. Two of the best ring workers on the roster right now put on a show for the crowd. The two are set to challenge Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Title on the live SmackDown this week. To say that the three could put on an epic match for WWE week would be an understatement.

Now let’s take a look at the Slammy’s –

  • BREAKOUT STAR – NEVILLE – BAD! The only good part about this was that it showed that validity of the Slammys being a fan-voting event. Any group of logical thinking professionals would see that Kevin Owens had the best rookie year, by far! I say it with every All-Star Game in professional sports, fan voting is the worst idea!

  • LOL MOMENT – R-TRUTH – Eh, ok. None of the nominees were really side-splitters by any means (although Miz doing an impotency pill commercial is always fun to see), but Truth has always been able to tickle a funny bone or two every now and then.

  • OMG MOMENT – KALISTO – First off, way too many awards named after texting acronyms. As for the award, Kalisto’s move at this month’s TLC show was amazing, but hard to say it was more shocking than Seth Rollins cashing in Money in the Bank during the biggest match of the biggest show of the year.

  • SUPERSTAR OF THE YEAR – SETH ROLLINS – Hey! The WWE Universe got one! How can you argue that Rollins did not have the best year in WWE? The only thing that could stop Seth Rollins this year was Seth Rollins.

  • HERO IN ALL OF US – JOHN CENA – Cena does amazing work out of the ring and always has during his run at the top of the company. I do have a problem with how this was set up though. For an award like this, why have nominees? Why have a group of people that “lose” in this award? What should have been done is have a montage of all of the charitable events that WWE does, featuring those nominated for the award and announce John Cena as the winner of the award. Mark Henry did an amazing job wrapping the segment up as well.

  • SURPRISE RETURN OF THE YEAR – STING – Disclaimer, I am and always have been a big Sting fan. That being said, how can the award go to someone that was on the show a few months ago over a team regarded as one of the greatest tag teams of all time returning to WWE after an 11 year absence? The Dudleys…I’m talking about the Dudley Boys.

  • DIVA OF THE YEAR – NIKKI BELLA – Those that follow us on Twitter @From _TheTopRope know that I called the Steve Harvey reference during the Slammys. I’ve heard a lot of negative feedback on this one. Why? Nikki held the Divas title in 2015 longer than any Diva that has ever held the title! How do you argue that?

  • THIS IS AWESOME – THE ROCK AND RONDA ROUSEY – Apparently this is different than the OMG Moment. Aaaaaaanyway…I still say that the introduction of the NXT Divas this summer should get this nod, but all I could think of is how The Rock and Rousey used WrestleMania 31 to set up something for the biggest WrestleMania ever…and now they both will probably not be there.

  • MATCH OF THE YEAR – BROCK LESNAR vs THE UNDERTAKER at HELL IN A CELL – This was a good match, but I could of at least a handful of better matches this year off the top of my head – most notably the Lesnar/Cena/Rollins match at the Royal Rumble.
