So many chances, so many teases. It’s about time that the powers that be realize that at this point Cesaro has a pocket full of brass rings!
It’s been months since the now infamous comments made by Vince McMahon on Stone Cold Steve Austin’s first podcast televised on the WWE Network. “Grabbing the brass ring” seems to be a theme for McMahon – it was even mentioned a few times during the Summer of Punk in 2011.
It seemed like The Swiss Superman may have been getting a bit more main event attention last month leading into Survivor Series before he went in for surgery. This may be the best thing for him.
His return needs to be made into an event worth waiting for! We need vignettes showing him in rehab. We need a “X” Weeks Away countdown to build it up. We need a return program against The Authority or another top heel. This could very well be the way to fix the currently broken product. This is what the majority of the WWE Universe wants. And with viewership numbers falling faster than Sheamus’ championship credibility, it’s about time to start thinking about what the WWE Universe wants.
I’m not saying this by any means, but the strongest argument that McMahon may be starting to lose touch with the audience comes with guys like Cesaro. Which is confusing a bit since Cesaro has the superhuman strength that Vince built his company around in the 80s. It’s still brings me to my feet watching Cesaro spinning The Great Khali or picking Big Show up, EASILY, and dropping him over the ropes to win the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 30.
Before this seems to be a love letter addressed to Cesaro, he does have his flaws – mainly some mic work. It seems like he was given the opportunity to make his statement a while back by being given a live mic. His response – letting us know that he is not 100% sure on the number of ropes that a wrestling ring has.
He is not perfect on the mic at this point, but its not bad enough that he should be held back the way he has been. Owen Hart was on his way to being a top name in the company before his accident in 1999. When his singles career first started in late 1993, let’s be honest, he was god-awful on the mic. Watch the promo that he gave right after he turned on his brother Bret at the 1994 Royal Rumble – Cesaro is not THAT bad!
My hope is that with the new crop of stars coming up from NXT, Cesaro will get his chance. The new style of wrestler is perfect for Cesaro. He has already had a few great matches with Kevin Owens over the summer and he has had instant classics with Sami Zayn. We could get more classics with The Swiss Superman going up against the likes of Hideo Itami, Samoa Joe and Finn Balor.
Not only does it make sense in the ring but it makes perfect sense out of the ring. The man can speak multiple languages. He can make audience connections, media appearances literally all over the world. The WWE Network is still launching in new countries. What better way to create a buzz with the people than with someone who can easily communicate with all of them?
The bottom line is that Cesaro can be a solid World Heavyweight Champion. If you think that Cesaro in a suit with the belt over his shoulder wouldn’t be the right championship look and wouldn’t be appealing to the casual viewer then you’re saying that Jason Statham wouldn’t have the right look. Wrong!
With the recent popularity of the “Cesaro Section” a Cesaro title win could very well garner the same reaction as Daniel Bryan’s championship win did at WrestleMania 30.
The people want to see Cesaro as champion. If it happens, hey, maybe people will actually come back and watch Raw on a more regular basis.
