The Return of the NWO?

We have been hearing the rumors for a few months now – is the Bullet Club on its way to WWE? Finn Balor is already established in NXT, AJ Styles made his long-awaited debut at the Royal Rumble and the team of Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows have recently finished their commitments with New Japan Pro Wrestling and should be heading over soon.

But will this be the only faction that we see forming over the next few months? There has been some backstage buzz of the return of the three letters that bring a huge, nostalgic smile to the face of all wrestling fans …

…N…

…W…

…O!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the nWo…what am I saying, if you don’t know who the nWo is then you’re not a wrestling fan, which makes me question why you would be reading this. So, for family members that are reading this, here is a quick rundown –

In 1996, two of the top young stars in WWF, Razor Ramon (Scott Hall) and Diesel (Kevin Nash) left after signing with rival WCW. The two were introduced as “Outsiders” who were there to take over WCW. The two would tease that they had a third guy working for them, and that third guy turned out to be Hulk Hogan who did theKevin-Nash-nWo-WWE-2002-Promo-Pic-600x400 unthinkable and became a “bad guy.” The nWo was born that night and would create chaos on a weekly basis on WCW’s Monday night show, Monday Nitro. During the nWo’s reign of terror, WCW would defeat WWF in the ratings for over 80 consecutive Monday night’s.

For weeks now there has been a bit of backstage buzz that founding nWo member Kevin Nash have been pitching the idea of bringing back the renegade group with Nash serving as their manager. For a while this has just been a rumor, but there has been some word that the idea is indeed picking up steam.

We have seen rehashed ideas flop in the past – one even being WCW trying to redo the nWo. For the most part they can be good for a one off appearance, but historically they have struggled to have a long run.

I think this could work though.

If Nash would have pitched this idea with him as an in-ring leader, obviously the idea would be doomed to fail. Nothing against Nash, he has always been one of my favorites, but it is pretty safe to say that Nash has lost a step or two and I’m pretty sure he would be the first to tell you the same. As a manager though, he could be the mouthpiece for the group while possible throwing a jackknife or two out there as well.

That just leaves the question of who to put in this new group.

There are a few different ways we could go here. The first would be to use the formula that Hall, Nash and Hogan used nearly 20 years ago – have two “outsiders” create several disturbances on Raw and have an established mega star brought in as a third guy like Hogan was.

With no real equivalent company like there was in the mid-90s, we’ll need to look to NXT. I can see Samoa Joe fit in this role. He has made a name for himself around the world to where enough people would know who he is. Plus, Joe worked closely with Nash in TNA – there is your connection.

For the second guy you would think a top name like Sami Zayn or Finn Balor – but I just can’t see those guys in this type of role. Baron Corbin on the other hand could provide nxt-takeover2-baron-corbinthe big bad ass type “invader” that Nash was in WCW. He would need to do a little more work on the mic, but talks of having The Lone Wolf on the main roster have been going on for months now.

For the third guy, there really is no question who it would need to be if you want to even get close to the reaction that Hogan got when he turned. That’s John Cena. And what perfect timing this would be! Could there be a more exciting, news-making way for Cena to make his first appearance back from his current injury then coming down to the ring to help the new invaders?

Another way to go with an nWo angle would be to have three top stars creating a seemingly unstoppably force that would give a new star, or a group of new stars roman-reigns-batistasomething to overcome. The trio that I had heard through social media would be Roman Reigns, a returning Randy Orton and the aforementioned Cena joining Nash in the familiar black and wife shirts.

This setup could be perfect for the situation WWE is in right now. One of the knocks that we keep hearing about WWE in the last year or two is that they are having a problem building young stars to reach the top spot. With this, they would have to create those new stars. The door would be open for the likes of Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt and countless NXT stars to reach the top to try and defend the WWE against the nWo.

At this point, it is a bit of a stretch that we would see something like this happen. If it does happen though, we could be in line for some of the most entertaining episodes of Raw that we have seen in the last few years.

Dare I say, Kevin Nash and the nWo taking over WWE and Raw would be … too … SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
