Stephen Curry’s used mouthguard could go for $5,000 at auction

It’s an odd day for news when a used mouthguard could go for thousands of dollars at an auction.

Then again, when one thinks of mouthguards in sports, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is the first person to come to mind. The guy uses the guards like a teeth-shaped piece of gum while he plays and he’s probably lost more than a few.

One has been found, though, and ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell has the details on an upcoming auction featuring the item:

SCP Auctions, which is based in California, said it obtained the mouthguard from a fan who picked it up off the floor near the Golden State Warriors bench after a game this season.

Oh, and here’s an interesting piece of persuasive talk about why this thing could go for $5,000:

“Steph Curry has given more life to mouthguards than any player in history,” said Dan Imler, vice president of the auction house. “The way he flips it in and out of his mouth has become part of watching him during a game.”

What does one do with a used mouthguard they purchase for $5,000?

Hard to say. But if this number really comes to fruition, Curry needs to think about getting out of the sneaker game and convincing Under Armour to start his own brand of mouthguards. The guy innovating the NBA right now could revolutionize the sports apparel business, too.

Just a thought.
