The Playbook MORE Open for Broncos QB

The Denver area is on pins and needles as the big decision approaches. Colorado is a swing state but we are not (and will not) talking politics we are talking selection of the starting QB for the Denver Broncos. Mark Sanchez did not even play in preseason game 3 and Trevor Siemian played well with the first team. This decision seems to be made. I wrote last week that John Elway and the Broncos front office would love to trade or release Mark Sanchez in order to save money.

Broncos fans are worried about the QB position and trusting such a young player with defending a Super Bowl title. This a legitimate worry but one that can be calmed quickly. Here is what Peyton Manning played last year (9 games):

60% completion percentage

249 yards/game

9 touchdowns

17 interceptions

Not the most overwhelming numbers. They are no better when you extend them to 16 games either.

Let’s add another aspect to this. Gary Kubiak’s offense prides itself on a strong running game, a strong play-action game and roll0uts.

Peyton didn’t like or excel at any of these three things. You might even say the offense of Gary Kubiak did not fit Peyton Manning’s strengths (and many in Colorado did say this).

Here were Peyton’s numbers on rollouts (which were never designed):

50% completion percentage

2.6 yards/completion

Again, not the most overwhelming numbers.

Add to this offense three (possibly 4) capable running backs to build the offense around and Trevor Siemian may not be the worst choice for Gary Kubiak’s offense.

Keep in mind the Houston Texans went 12-4 in 2012 with Matt Schaub and TJ Yates. Not exactly top level talent. In fact, Gary Kubiak’s record in Houston was 61-64 with David Carr. Matt Schaub, Sage Rosenfels, TJ Yates and Case Keenum as his starting QBs.

Trevor Siemian fits right in and the defense the Broncos bring into 2016 is better than anything those Texans teams put on the field.
