Jets tried to trade up for Brett Favre in 1991 draft

Brett Favre couldn’t get the Jets into the playoffs in 2008, his one season with the team.

He might have led them to a few postseason berths if the Jets were successful in their attempt to trade up for Favre in the 1991 NFL draft.

Ron Wolf was the Jets’ director of player personnel under general manager Dick Steinberg at the time. The Jets’ first pick was in the second round, at No. 34. Steinberg tried to swing a deal with the Falcons at No. 33 and the Cardinals at No. 32, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, but couldn’t close the deal.

The Falcons drafted Favre at No. 33, which was the sixth pick of the second round. Favre was buried on the depth chart in his rookie year. He partied a lot and fell asleep at team meetings, but this was the Pre-Selfie Era so that behavior flew under the radar.

The course of Favre’s career changed when Wolf became the Packers GM in 1992. He traded for Favre and finally got the quarterback he wanted, and a Hall of Fame career was launched. Favre will be inducted Aug. 6.

Several teams probably were kicking themselves over not drafting Favre. The Jets weren’t one of them because they never had a chance.
