Report: Jets could soon pull offer to Fitzpatrick

The contract standoff between the Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick will come to an end at some point.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the endgame might not be too far down the road.

Mehta suggested that the Jets could decide to take their offer to Fitzpatrick off the table.

“I think it’s coming a lot sooner than some people might expect, and if you’re in the Jets’ position I think your patience should be wearing thin,” Mehta said on PFT Live.

The Jets reportedly have offered Fitzpatrick a three-year deal that would pay $12 million in the first year and would be incentive-laden in the second and third years. According to Pro Football Talk Fitzpatrick was willing to accept a one-year deal for $12 million, but the Jets wanted more of a commitment.

At some point the Jets need to know who their quarterback will be in 2016. They’d probably rather have Fitzpatrick, who threw a franchise-record 31 touchdown passes last season, than a competition among Geno Smith, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.

But it seems they’d rather have the three-way competition than pay Fitzpatrick like a franchise quarterback.
