If Calvin Johnson decides to retire this offseason, he will have retired at age 30 like Lynn Swann.
The Hall of Fame receiver, however, says that the similarities should end there. According to Swann, Johnson’s accomplishments wouldn’t be enough to get him into the Hall of Fame.
“I would think that it would be difficult for Calvin Johnson at this point to be considered a Hall of Famer,” the legendary Steelers wide receiver told The Detroit News.
Swann, who won four Super Bowl rings with the Steelers in the 1970s, says that Johnson’s lack of championships is what will keep him out of the Hall of Fame.
It’s difficult to agree with Swann, however. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001 and Megatron has more than doubled him in career receptions (731-336) and receiving yards (11,619-5,462). He also has 83 career touchdown catches to Swann’s 51.
If anything, Swann’s Hall of Fame credentials might leave some to wonder. He’s 222nd all-time in receiving yards and 108th in receiving touchdowns, behind several receivers in both categories who won’t sniff the Hall of Fame. He’s not even among the top 250 all-time in receptions.
Swann isn’t known for saying crazy things. But this one is a head-scratcher.
