After a promising beginning to the season, Big East conference play has been unkind to the St. Johns Red Storm, who are currently in sixth place with a 17-9 overall record but a 6-7 conference record.
St. Johns seemed to find their footing recently, winning four of out five games since January 31st. After beating Providence at home, St. Johns lost to Butler on the road before ripping off three straight against Creighton, DePaul and Xavier. In their most recent game on Tuesday, St. Johns got steamrolled on the road at Georgetown by 22 points.
St. Johns is fighting an uphill battle if they’re looking for an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday. The Red Storm have five games remaining with three straight at home against Seton Hall, Xavier, Georgetown, before going on the road to take on Marquette and conference leading Villanova. Three quality wins are on the table assuming they don’t slip up against Seton Hall and Marquette.
After the Georgetown loss on Tuesday, St. Johns has one game remaining this week. On Saturday, February 21st, the Red Storm try to protect their home court against the downward spiraling Seton Hall Pirates. After a strong start to the season, the Pirates have lost five games in a row, including their last 26-point costly defeat by Villanova that made national headlines. The Pirates will be without their star player Sterling Gibbs, after he intentionally elbowed Villanova guard Ryan Arcidiacono in the face during a scramble for a loose ball.
