Rams select Goff as the number one pick in NFL draft

For the second time in seven years, the Los Angeles Rams used their first pick in the NFL draft to claim the services of a quarterback. Their selection of California’s Jared Goff means that he is now the twenty second quarterback to be the first draft pick since the inauguration of the common draft era in 1967. The Green Bay Packers were the last team to do so back in 2005, when they drafted Aaron Rodgers. The Rams will certainly be hopeful of achieving similar success with Goff at the helm. The Rams are relocating for the upcoming NFL season, having spent two years in St Louis, and traded multiple picks to the Tennessee Titans to earn the first selection of this year’s draft.

There had been much speculation surrounding who would be the Rams number one choice, with Goff along with North Dakota States Carson Wentz both in the running until late on. However, Wentz eventually ended up at the Philadelphia Eagles having been overlooked by Jeff Fisher and the Rams. Fisher has been in charge of the Rams since 2012, and will be looking to mark their return to Los Angeles with a successful campaign. However, they find themselves a massive 51/1 with bookmakers Betway to make next year’s Superbowl. Perhaps an outside bet with odds of 26/1 with Betway for the Rams to win the NFC is a little more likely.

Despite the football season not kicking off until August, there remain lots of sports to bet on this week. The NBA playoffs continue, and with the Atlanta Haws having eliminated the Boston Celtics recently, the likes of the Toronto Raptors, Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Spurs will all be looking to safely secure their path to the next round. Despite the loss of injured Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors remain the 2.2/1 favourites with Betway to go all the way this year.

The NFL takes a backseat for the next few months, however speculation regarding the integration of recent draft picks into rosters has already begun. The arrival of Goff is likely to mean that the Rams must lose one of their current quarterbacks, with Nick Foles the likely candidate. The twenty seven year old reportedly has a number of teams interested in acquiring his services.
