53 Recap: Avs 4 – Stars 3

Dallas 3 – Colorado 4

1st Period:

1.40 – Nathan MacKinnon (18)
Assists: Maxime Talbot (11), Tyson Barrie (10)

15:57 – Jamie McGinn (12)
Assists: Matt Duchene (27), Ryan O'Reilly (17)

17:27 – Jamie Benn (20)
Assist: Tyler Seguin (28)

  • For much of this period, the Stars looked listless and out of it. There were lazy passes and a lot of guys were just standing around. Alex Goligoski had a horrible neutral ice turnover that led to the Avs’ first goal.
  • Dallas had a three second power play late in the period that was quickly ended by an Erik Cole penalty.
  • Seguin was one of the few guys who were active out there. He did a great job winning the puck on the offensive boards and finding Benn for the Stars goal. Benn had six SOG in the first and was active as well.

2nd Period:

1:02 – Tyler Seguin (22) (Power Play)
Assists: Jamie Benn (28), Alex Goligoski (21)

17:75 – Paul Stastny (15) (Power Play)
Unassisted

18:13 – Tyler Seguin (23)
Assists: Alex Goligoski (22), Sergei Gonchar (16)

  • Dallas did get their power-play goal (PPG in eight straight now) early in the second on a 4-on-3 man advantage. Ruff called a timeout to get his guys out there, and it paid off. Cody Eakin did great work winning the puck, Jamie made a great cross-ice pass to Seguin and he blasted a tough angle one-timer for the tying goal. Seguin broke a 12-game goal drought with this score.
  • Dallas also worked in a great PK after an iffy call on Roussel. The Stars had three quality chances and had more control that the Avs did despite being a man down. Goose made a couple of big hits, and Fiddler had a breakaway chance.
  • Semyon Varlamov was huge in this period despite allowing a goal. He made a couple of saves on breakaway attempts and was the only reason why the Avs weren’t behind going into the third period.
  • Colorado scored a late period PPG after Jordie Benn had a bad turnover along the boards in his own end. Benn threw the back in the middle of the ice and Statsny had a quick backhander for the goal.
  • Seguin scored his second just 16 seconds after the Statsny goal. He blasted one by Varlamov’s armpit to tie the game.

3rd Period:

4:13 – Alex Tanguay (4)
Assists: Gabriel Landeskog (26), Maxime Talbot (12)

  • The Avs got a lucky goal when Tanguay’s shot/pass deflected off of Gonchar’s skate and went into the net. It was a tough pill to swallow because Dallas had just gotten momentum after a good power play.

Other Observations:

  • Valarmov stole the first game between these two teams and was huge in the second game. He was the biggest difference in this game once again, and he ends this year with a 4-0-0 record against Dallas.
  • Dallas is a very odd 0-3-4 when they record 40+ shots in a game this season.
