Game 57 Recap: Dallas Stars lose 2-1 in OT to Sharks

Final OT

Dallas 1 – San Jose 2

1st Period:

No scoring

  • San Jose controlled this game for the first 10 minutes. They were playing at a frenetic pace and causing multiple turnovers from the Stars. Cody Eakin turned the puck over right in front of Kari and was lucky that the Sharks didn’t score a goal.
  • The forecheck from San Jose was causing huge problems. Lehtonen also nearly got caught behind the net with puck after an aggressive forecheck from the Sharks.
  • This first period was all about Kari Lehtonen and his ability to keep the puck out of the net. San Jose could’ve easily had a 3-0 lead.
  • Stalock absolutely robbed Jamie Benn of a goal with six minutes left in the period. Benn received a pass on the left side of Stalock just outside the crease and ostensibly had a wide open net. Stalock quickly got over and made a fantastic glove save to keep the game at 0-0.
  • San Jose outshot Dallas 9-6 in this period.

2nd Period:

18:34 – Martin Havlat (4)
Assists: Scott Hannan (7), James Sheppard (6)

  • Rich Peverley took a very rare penalty in the first half of the period. The Stars were able to shut down the Sharks PP pretty easily though.
  • Dallas played some great defense for most of this period and kept Kari clean. Dallas really slowed the game down and the Sharks from the first 10 minutes of the first period were nowhere to be seen. It was a long stretch of some listless hockey.
  • It all changed though with just two minutes to go as Marty Havlat was able to tip a puck by Lehtonen. It was pretty much the only time in the period in which San Jose put pressure on Kari and it led a goal.

3rd Period:

6:27 – Valeri Nichushkin (12)
Assists: Trevor Daley (6), Tyler Seguin (32)

  • Stalock continued to be an impenetrable wall in the Sharks’ net. He stoned Jamie Benn once again in the early minutes of the third.
  • The Stars finally broke through with a Val Nichushkin goal with 13 minutes to go. He got the puck from Daley and sniped it from the between the circles.
  • The Sharks lost Matt Nieto in this period to a lower body injury. He blocked a shot from Trevor Daley late in the second period and didn’t come out for the third.
  • Things got a little dicey in the last six minutes as Erik Cole took two separate penalties. Luckily, the Stars were able to kill both.

Overtime:

1:52 Tommy Wingels (11)
Assists: Martin Havlat (6), Scott Hannan (8)

  • Kari made a huge save 30 seconds in the OT. The Sharks had a 3-on-1, and he made a huge glove save.
  • Tommy Wingels ended up scoring the game winner. Havlat made a great pass through the crease to Wingels, and he put it by Lehtonen.

Other Observations/Notes:

  • Seguin is up to seven games now in his point streak. He also has at least one assist in seven straight.
