Recapping the Trade Deadline: Moves made in Conference III

It was a wild trade deadline this year, a lot busier than usual, and a bunch of teams in Conference III made moves.

The Stars, of course, made two moves. They sent Robidas to the Ducks for a conditional fourth-rounder and traded Dan Ellis for Tim Thomas straight-up.

Chicago Blackhawks

  • Traded Brandon Pirri to the Florida Panthers for a 2014 third-round pick and a 2016 fifth-round pick.

Pirri is an interesting prospect but was expendable once the Blackhawks traded for Peter Regin. Pirri will have ample opportunities to make the Panthers.

  • Traded a 2014 second-round pick to the Phoenix Coyotes for defensemen David Rundblad and Mathieu Brisebois.

Rundblad is a nice prospect, though a bit older at 23. He’s more of an offensive defenseman and will have some trouble cracking the lineup this season. He’s a good piece for the future though. He’s played in 50 games in his career, scoring one goal and registering eight assists.

Brisebois is an AHL-only guy.

St. Louis Blues

  • The Blues made no more moves after that huge trade for Ryan Miller and Steve Ott. They were pretty quiet during the deadline and weren’t really involved in anything else.

Colorado Avalanche

  • The Av’s made a small move by trading a 2014 second-round pick to the Calgary Flames for goalie Reto Berra.

It seems like the Avs made this move just to make sure they had a goalie ready in case something happened to Semyon Varlamov. J.S. Giguere is dealing with some back recurring back problems and might not be fully available.

Berra had been 9-17-2 with a 2.95 GAA and .897 save percentage with the Flames this season

  • More important is who they didn’t trade as Ryan O’Reilly and Paul Stastny went nowhere.

Minnesota Wild

  • The Wild were the busiest team in Conference III during the deadline.  Their first move was trading a 2014 fifth-round pick and a 2015 third-round pick to the Edmonton Oilers for Ilya Bryzgalov.

Usual starter Niklas Backstrom was shut down for the rest of the year due to a abdominal injury, so the Wild were definitely in the market for a goalie. Bryz is a wildly inconsistent goalie, so it’ll be interesting to see if he’s a full backup or a co-starter with Darcy Kuemper.

  • The Wild also traded forward Torrey Mitchell, a 2014 second-round pick and a 2016 second-round pick to the Buffalo Sabres for noted Stars killer Matt Moulson and depth forward Cody McCormick.

The Moulson deal is going to kill Stars fans as his history against the team shows how diabolical he can be against the Stars. Luckily for Dallas, they only play the Wild one more time this season.

Moulson will probably be a wing on the second line while McCormick is a depth player.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets did nothing during the deadline. The only news they received was bad news as center Mark Scheifele was diagnosed with a MCL injury and is out for the rest of the regular season.

Nashville Predators

  • Nashville made a couple of minor moves at the deadline. The first thing was sending Devan Dubnyk to waivers before trading him to the Montreal Canadiens for future considerations.

With Pekka Rinne back on the ice, Dubnyk was no longer needed.

  • The Preds made a second, late move by trading David Legwand to the Detroit Red Wings for forwards Patrick Eaves, Calle Jarnkrok and a 2014 conditional third-round pick.

It’s an interesting move here as Legwand was a top-line center with the Predators while Eaves is a bottom-six forward and Jarnkrok is an AHL player.

It looks like Colin Wilson will get a promotion to the top six now that Legwand is gone.
