A scout from an unnamed NFC team has compared Cal quarterback Jared Goff to Jay Cutler.
Ouch.
Goff and Carson Wentz are considered head-and-shoulders above the rest as the top two quarterback prospects in the 2016 NFL draft, but not according to this anonymous NFC scout and two other scouts who talked to NJ.com about Goff. None of them represented teams that are expected to take a quarterback in the first round.
Among the concerns was Goff’s 13-23 record as a starter in college, although he improved from 1-11 as a freshman to 5-7 as a sophomore to 7-5 as a junior.
And of course, no conversation about Goff this spring is complete without mentioning hand size. Goff’s nine-inch hands (although they measured a quarter-inch bigger at his pro day) have turned off some teams. Wentz’s mitts, by comparision, are 10 inches.
Cutler has started 134 games in his 10-year career. He’s made a Pro Bowl and led the Bears to the 2010 NFC championship game. However, he’s 67-67 in his career as a starter and in 2009 and 2014 he led the NFL in interceptions.
A team using an early-round draft pick on a quarterback is going to want a little more than that.
