Ricky Williams says majority of players, some coaches use marijuana

SI.com’s documentary of former NFL running back Ricky Williams has been released today, and among the nuggets in the film is Williams’ claim that between 60 to 70 percent of NFL players, as well as some coaches, smoke marijuana.

Williams rushed for 10,009 yards in an 11-year career that never lived up to its promise after the Saints traded eight draft picks to move up and draft him fifth overall in 1999.

Williams said he smoked marijuana during his NFL career to manage the pain that comes with playing such a grueling sport. If he is to be believed, about two-thirds of the players in the NFL today are doing the same thing.

And if he’s right about coaches using marijuana, second-guessers might start asking “What was he smoking?” when questioning a coaching decision.
