49ers expect big things from Jarryd Hayne in 2016

We haven’t seen the last of Jarryd Hayne, 49ers executive Paraag Marathe told the San Jose Mercury News.

“I think you’ll see a jump from him,” said Marathe, who despite being in charge of the team’s analytics department pointed to an intangible reason for his belief in the former Australian rugby player.

“Willpower” and “desire” were among the terms Marathe used.

The 28-year-old running back appeared in eight games for the 49ers last season. He ran the ball 17 times for 52 yards and returned eight punts for 76 yards.

Hayne was demoted to the practice squad but regained his roster spot and appeared in the 49ers’ final two games.

It would seem that every player in the NFL has a certain amount of willpower and desire. That’s what it takes to make it that far. Marathe didn’t make clear how Hayne’s willpower and desire sets him apart from the rest of the league.

It’s intriguing, however, to see what Chip Kelly will do with Hayne. Perhaps he can make him more than just a foreign novelty.
