Inside The Film Room With Dustin Dobbs: Portland Trail Blazers Guard to Guard Ball Screen Action

This season, the Portland Trail Blazers had 3 of the most explosive guards in the NBA in Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum (Most Improved Player), and Allen Crabbe (6th Man of the Year Candidate), as they were 1 of 5 NBA teams to have 2 guards in the top 25 in points off screens.

Crabbe made one of the best under the radar improvements in the NBA, jumping from 3 points per game to over 10, shooting 35% from 3 to just under 40%, and going from 30 made 3s to 112. Not to mention, the former 2nd round pick (31st overall in 2013) led all guards in the NBA this year in points and made field goals in pick and roll actions where he is the roll man. In these scenarios, Crabbe shot 50%, scoring 40% of the time he was involved in this action.

The proof is in the film.

These are a few actions the Blazers excel in involving a guard to guard ball screen. The enclosed clips shows how the defense tries trapping the ball handler, which allows the screener to set a brush screen and flare pretty easily. In a few instances the weak-side big is imperative in helping to free up the guard. Thanks to Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum and Allen Crabbe, the Blazers frequently use guard to guard ball screen actions as a great way to get their rolling guards shots.

Keep an eye out for these sets tonight when Portland and the Los Angeles Clippers face off in Game 6.
