Not all heroes wear capes. The hockey mullet is a long honored tradition that spans decades. The news today should come as no surprise to those that follow the game closely. People have been praying to see Jaromir Jagr’s legendary mullet come out of retirement and alas, the time has finally come.

His teammate Roberto Luongo had been openly lobbying to the Twitterverse that Jagr had to bring it back:

He followed up the recent news with a tweet simply reading “We did it!”

While we are on the topic of mullets, I have decided to rank the all time best hockey mullets. You could put any of Jagr’s iterations on this list so I am going to exclude him. This list is in no way comprehensive but instead a completely subjective list of my personal favorites.

3. Brian Engblom (Broadcaster’s edition)

Brian Engblom

After an 11 year career, Engblom has found himself as one of the premier color analysts in the game. Having worked for ESPN, NBC Sports, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche at times, he is now going to be working full time for the Tampa Bay Lightning. His recent move begs the question: Did he get the job on merit alone or were they influenced by a mullet so beautiful, they had no choice but to give him the job? We may never know the answer but the magic in those follicles is hard to deny.

2. Ken Baumgartner

Ken Baumgartner

This is a throwback for many of you reading this, but Baumgartner was a bruiser who only scored more than 10 points once in his 12 in the league. While Baumgartner made a statement with his fists during his tenure, he also made a statement with his hair – a beautiful flowing statement.

1. Patrick Roy

Patrick Roy Mullet

While not only being one of the best goaltenders of all time, he also rocked himself a mean mullet back in the day. His mullet could be described as understated but I believe it is just right. He is a man that knew what he wanted and it was the perfect balance between business and party.
