Those Carolina ties really are strong, it seems.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is in a great position to win the Most Valuable Player award, as his team has yet to lose and he’s having a career year as far as numbers go. Newton has thrown for 3,062 yards, and has a 28:10 TD:INT ratio. His biggest improvement has been in his efficiency, as he’s making smart decisions with the football and has a 96.9 QB rating.

With Tom Brady turning in a few subpar performances this season (by his standards), many writers and analysts, myself included, believe Newton should win the MVP award. And we’re not alone.

Stephen Curry recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s Robert Mays, and the reigning NBA MVP gave Newton a ringing endorsement regarding why he should be named MVP.

“To see Cam doing what he’s doing and leading a team after all the critics basically said he’s a mediocre quarterback,” Curry said. “As a fan, I never believed that. It’s great to see him out there playing well. He should be the MVP when it’s all said and done.”

Curry also opened up about the friendship that exists between the two superstars.

“We talk about the ride, but we also just kind of motivate each other without really speaking,” Curry said. “What we’re seeing each other do on the field and on the court, that’s just motivation for us.”

“I was always a fan of him,” Newton said. “He’s not big. He’s not tall. He’s not the guy that’s going to make that amazing dunk. You know he works on his skill. That’s a character that’s just America, that blue-collar person that works on each and every part of his game.”

Newton seems to be in good position to win the award, now he just needs to finish the season like he started it.
