Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said during a pre-draft press conference Friday that the team remains focused of re-signing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

“Our focus has always been Ryan,” Maccagnan said, according to Pro Football Talk.

It’s not that the sides have come any closer to a deal, but perhaps Maccagnan was talking up Fitzpatrick because the Jets aren’t in as much of a position to draft a cornerback as they were early last week. Jared Goff and Carson Wentz are almost certain to be off the board after the second pick, and at No. 2o the Jets might not have a shot a Paxton Lynch.

While Maccagnan wasn’t the Jets’ GM in 2009 when they traded from No. 17 to No. 5 to draft Mark Sanchez, it’s safe to assume he knows enough football history to not repeat a mistake like that.
