The AU$3.1 Million BMW Caulfield Cup
The flagship event for the Caulfield Cup Carnival is, of course the Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup. With a purse of AU$3.1 million, this is the richest turf handicap over 2 400 meters in the world, and it attracts a global field every year. This year the fun gets started on Saturday the 21st of October.
The iconic trophy alone is worth AU$155 000, and many champions have managed to win this race over the course of its 139-year history. Past winners include Might and Power, Let’s Elope, Rising Fast, Northerly, Leilani, and Tobin Bronze. In 1998 the BMW Caulfield Cup became an international event when Lady Herries took the race out with Taufan Melody. She became the first woman in history to have trained a horse that went on to win the Caulfield Cup in the process!
