Jacksonville police spent the early hours of Sunday morning helping Jaguars running back Denard Robinson and his Chevrolet Impala out of a local pond.
According to the Florida Times-Union, Robinson fell asleep at the wheel and drove his vehicle into the retention pond around 4:00 a.m. Authorities are not pressing DUI charges, although the police report said Robinson fell back asleep after the responding officer kicked in the driver’s side window and began rescuing Robinson and his passenger.
Everything about the incident sounds ridiculous.
Robinson and his passenger, a 29-year-old female, refused to exit the vehicle despite the Impala sinking into the surrounding water.
“Robinson thought he was still on the road and didn’t want to exit the vehicle, according to the report. He tried to open the driver’s side door about three times after the officer repeated that the car was sinking in the pond, according to the report.”
Neither person was injured.
Robinson, a fifth-round pick of the Jaguars in 2013, rushed for 266 yards and one touchdown last season, while also catching 21 passes. He’s scored five touchdowns during his three NFL seasons.
Robinson, 25, tweeted out this statement on Tuesday:

The Jaguars also released a statement acknowledging the incident.
“The team is aware that running back Denard Robinson was involved in a single-car accident over the weekend and is thankful that nobody was injured,” the statement said.
While no charges have been filed, the NFL could investigate the incident further under its player conduct policy. There’s a good chance this won’t be the last time we hear of this wild, unbelievable story.
