Free-agent wide receiver Josh Morgan, who spent seven seasons in the league with the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears, accidentally shot himself last month, and then was charged with a crime, TMZ Sports reported Wednesday.

Police in Virginia responded to a report of a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 9 p.m. ET on Jan. 31, leading them to 30-year-old Morgan, who claimed the loaded gun went off accidentally while he was cleaning it.

Morgan was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a representative from his camp told TMZ Sports, “He’s fine. It was a simple accident.”

Morgan, who was cut by the New Orleans Saints before the start of the 2015 season, has been charged with misdemeanor reckless use of a firearm. He is scheduled to appear in court in March.
