What looked like a Bears interception turned into a wild and controversial touchdown catch Sunday by Lions wide receiver Golden Tate.

The play at Ford Field originally was ruled an interception by Bears linebacker Jonathan Anderson. Upon further review, however, Tate apparently crossed the goal line and scored the touchdown before the ball came loose.

The touchdown, Tate’s first of the year, increased the Lions’ lead over the Bears to 21-13, which was the score at halftime. It appeared that Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller knocked the ball from Tate’s possession before he really made a football move with the ball. The ball then ricocheted off Bears nose tackle Eddie Goldman before Anderson caught it. But Tate was awarded the touchdown on replay.

It might appear that a master’s degree is now required to determine what a catch is in the NFL, but maybe this is the kind of break the Lions (0-5) need to get that elusive first win.
