FSU QB Jameis Winston is coming off a magical season in which he won both the Heisman Trophy and the BCS National Championship. His stock is high, and many analysts already had him penciled in as one of the top three prospects available in the 2015 NFL Draft.
But according to his father, he’ll be remaining at FSU for two more years to pursue and acquire an Engineering degree (via a report published on AL.com).
“We want Jameis to succeed with one more year in baseball and two more years in football,” Antonor Winston said to AL.com’s Jeff Sentell. “We’ve never strayed from our plan that he is going to be in college until he gets that degree.”
If this is true, Winston would play three seasons of football at FSU before declaring for the 2016 NFL Draft as a redshirt junior. According to his father, he’s expected to graduate in December 2015 with an Engineering degree in the biomedical or mechanical field.
But what about his baseball career?
“We have heard for him to go in the first round of the baseball draft then he will have to give up football,” Antonor Winston told Sentell.
It’s great to see that Winston may be staying in school to attain a degree—education is important. That being said, what if the Seminoles repeat as national champions or Winston wins a second Heisman? Either of these potential achievements could change his mind.
This will be a very interesting story to follow in the upcoming college football season. Winston’s play on the field has been nothing short of amazing, but his incidents off the field have raised eyebrows. Maybe staying in school really is the best possible option for him right now, even though he will surely be faced with a lot of pressure to turn pro while his stock is high.
One thing’s for sure: FSU fans have to be thrilled after reading this report.
