It’s common knowledge that league MVP Stephen Curry rarely guards opposing point guards. Whether that job is tasked to Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala or someone else, Steph is seldom asked to guard some of the league’s best, which obviously makes things a bit easier for him on the offensive end as he doesn’t have to expend as much energy.
Curry had a bounceback game and dropped 31 points in Thursday’s 120-111 win in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. On the other side of the ball, Kevin Durant scored a game-high 40 points and asserted his will throughout the game.
Durant and Russell Westbrook sat down to speak with the media after the game, and the Thunder forward was asked if Curry is underrated as a defender by a reporter.
The question seemed to amuse Westbrook, who shook his head and couldn’t keep himself from smirking as Durant tried to find the right words for a response.
Durant commented that Curry moves his feet well and gets steals, but added that he likes the matchup for the Thunder. He threw a bit of shade at Curry as well.
“He’s pretty good … but he doesn’t guard the best point guards,” Durant said.
Durant clearly didn’t want to blatantly throw Curry under the bus, but he made sure to stick up for Westbrook and got a clever jab in there as well.
