Thanks to Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, there might be a new award category: Empty Claim of the NBA Offseason.

Grousbeck told CSN New England, via NBC Sports, that he believes the Celtics, not the Thunder, came in second in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes.

“Just as I walk around by myself thinking, I think we were in the final two teams. I’m not even sure he was going back to OKC,” Grousbeck said.

Durant ended up signing with the Warriors, so it really doesn’t matter which team came in second in the competition for his services.

The Celtics did land Al Horford, so they have been players in free agency. But in Boston, they don’t raise Final Two banners to the rafters for their efforts to sign a prized free agent.
