The San Francisco 49ers will reportedly use the NFL Scouting Combine to gather more information on the future of quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers and Kaepernick’s representatives are planning to meet in Indianapolis this week, potentially to gauge the quarterback’s interest in playing for a new coaching staff in San Francisco next season.

Barrows said it’s “unclear what will be discussed,” but with Kaepernick’s base salary in 2016 becoming fully guaranteed on April 1, the 49ers will soon need to make decisions about his roster status. It’s possible Kaepernick may still want out of San Francisco, especially if the 49ers inquire about a pay cut or contract restructuring in Indianapolis.

Kaepernick, 28, regressed sharply in 2015, throwing for six touchdowns and five interceptions before being benched for backup Blaine Gabbert. The 49ers eventually placed him on season-ending injured reserve in late November. Kaepernick has since needed three surgeries to fix issues with his shoulder, thumb and knee.

The 49ers may want an update on his recovery, although Barrow said his rehab is on schedule—with Kaepernick expected to be healed by early April. San Francisco would likely require confirmation before committing to the quarterback on a guaranteed deal for 2016.

Owner Jed York said back in January that the hiring of head coach Chip Kelly would be a “fresh start for everybody,” but it’s still uncertain if Kaepernick is on board for San Francisco’s vision of the future. A scheduled meeting at the scouting combine this week should help provide some answers for both sides.
