The L.A. Clippers may not be the only team in the area that will operate under new ownership.

Philip Anschutz and AEG may attempt to sell the L.A. Kings at the conclusion of the 2014 season, according to a report in the New York Post. One “well-placed banker” told The Post the team has been losing money and has essentially been up for sale for the past five years if the right bid came along.

“I can assure you there will be a de-coupling of [AEG’s] content from real estate,” the banker said.

But AEG’s chief legal officer Ted Fikre is saying otherwise.

“AEG has no interest in auctioning any of its sports teams currently or at any time in the near future,” he told The Post.

AEG currently owns and operates many arenas and stadiums around the globe, and the team could use the money from the sale to acquire or build more venues.

It certainly looks like AEG is trying to “sell high” and also cut its losses here. Could another Stanley Cup win inflate the team’s stock enough for a potential buyer to jump the gun and put in a hefty offer?

The Kings are currently three wins away from hoisting this year’s Stanley Cup, and they certainly don’t need any distractions. The players and coaches can’t be happy with this untimely report.
