Jumbo Jabs

The Sharks cleaned out their lockers today, visibly bringing the terrible 2014-2015 season to a final end. Media was there and, as always, the Sharks had  few things to say about the way the season ended. Logan Couture made is unhappiness with the club’s culture known, the quote that got the most traction came from Joe Thornton.

If you can’t see the video, Thornton was asked if a coaching change was needed in San Jose. He responded with this, ”I have no idea. Todd has to talk to his family. Maybe he should talk to this family as well in here. We’ll see what happens.”

Seems fairly innocuous, but the reaction from the media was decidedly less measured, calling it a “jab” at McLellan and questioning the relationship between former Captain and coach. I’m not sure why this was taken as a jab, Thornton isn’t speaking with spite or anger, he seems to just be stating an opinion on how any potential coaching change in San Jose should be handled.

I really don’t see it that way. It doesn’t sound like a call out or a jab, it sounds more like a request to please, talk to the players before making any decisions. Don’t forget to hear what we have to say too. That’s it. Just a request.

Maybe there is a rift between Jumbo and McLellan, but I don’t think this quote was an indication of it. I think it was a line that makes for a good story after a very tumultuous season.

I watch the Sharks because I enjoy futility. I write about them because it's funny.
