I’m not sure why it happened on May 5th, but Oregon State parted ways with Craig Robinson today. The President’s brother in law never made an NCAA tournament appearance with the Beavers, and finished the season inside the KenPom top 100 just twice in his 6 year tenure. He finished with a 93-104 record overall, and his best Pac 10/12 finish was a tie for 5th in 2010.
Robinson somehow managed to recruit fairly well to Corvallis, but never translated that to wins on the court. In an era where the Pac 10/12 was decidedly down, Robinson was never able to take advantage. Granted, having a Nike flagship in the same state must have been difficult, but had Robinson come back he would have been the only major conference head coach to get a 7th year without making an NCAA tournament in his first six.
Oregon State loses all 5 starters from last year’s team, and although they added Maryland transfer Nick Faust, I have to imagine he will be headed elsewhere now. Oregon State now finds itself in a similarly precarious position as Missouri, who waited until after the Spring live period to hire a coach. Whomever the Beavers go with, he’s going to have his work cut out for him just to get high major caliber players on campus this next season.
