2015 Panthers Trade Deadline: Transactions and Reactions

The NHL Trade Deadline is 3 P.M. today and the Cats are already on the move. Let’s take a look at the Panthers have already done and see how it impacts the team.

Trade One (February 24th, 2015 – 08:07 PM)

To FLA:

  • 3rd-Round Pick 2016 (Min)

To MIN:

  • Sean Bergenheim (Pending UFA)
  • 7th-Round Pick 2016 (FLA)

TSS Staff Member A.J. wrote pretty heavily about this trade already.

Trade Two (February 26th, 2015 – 04:37 PM)

To FLA:

  • Jaromir Jagr (Pending UFA)

To NJD:

  • 2nd-Round Pick 2015
  • 3rd-Round Pick 2016 *Conditional (See below)

Personally, I’m a big fan of this trade. It’s become very apparent this trade deadline that it’s a sellers market (Coburn, Sekera, Vermette etc.) and I think the Panthers picked up tremendous value. The addition of Jagr is immeasurable for Florida’s core group of young forwards (Barkov, Bjugstad, Huberdeau, Pirri, Trocheck) as they’ll have the benefit of a first-ballot Hall of Famer in the locker room. Jagr’s work ethic and incredible commitment to the game will have a profound effect on the Panthers youth. This one is a big win for the Panthers.

Conditional Pick:

  • NJD will have the choice of either FLA’s 3rd-round pick in 2016 or MIN’s 3rd-round pick in 2016 (Bergenheim trade)

Pros:

  • FLA immediately adds some much needed scoring (Jagr joins the team 6th in Points + 3rd in Goals)
  • Jagr will have a strong impact on the developmental of FLA’s young forwards
  • FLA has a plethora of picks this draft and did not move a prospect
  • NJD is responsible for picking up Jagr’s $2M games-played bonus

Cons:

  • Jagr is a pending UFA and his future is undecided

Trade Three (February 28th, 2015 – 01:39 PM)

To FLA:

  • 3rd-Round Pick 2015
  • Dany Heatley (San Antonio Rampage)

To NJD:

  • Tomas Fleischmann (Pending UFA)

The Panthers make another move a few days after the Jagr trade and send Flash to Anaheim. There is some misinformation regarding this transaction that I would like to clarify. The deal is, in reality, Fleischmann for Anaheim’s 3rd-Round Pick. Dany Heatley was a salary dump from ANA so that FLA would not have to retain any salary for Fleischmann. Heatley will immediately report to the Panthers AHL-affiliate in San Antonio. I’d say with about 90-95% confidence that Heatley WILL NOT play for the Florida Panthers. Unless Heatley goes on an absolute tear in the AHL or Florida has a barrage of injuries, Mr. “50 in ’07” will stay in the AHL where he has recorded 2 goals and 5 assists in 25 games played. Another interesting facet of this move is that it allows Vincent Trocheck a roster spot.

Pros:

  • FLA grabs an additional pick for the upcoming draft at BB&T
  • FLA sheds a large amount of $
  • FLA now has a roster spot for Trocheck

Cons:

  • Fleischmann was a productive forward at the time of this trade
  • People think this trade is about Heatley and I waste a significant portion of my day correcting people

All Transactions (As of 08:45 AM)

FLA IN:

3rd-Round Pick 2015 (ANA)
3rd-Round Pick 2016 (Min)
Dany Heatley (San Antonio Rampage)
Jaromir Jagr (Pending UFA)

2nd-Round Pick 2015 (FLA)
3rd-Round Pick 2016 (FLA) * Conditional
7th-Round Pick 2016 (FLA)
