Welcome to our second to last installment of Hockey Fights of the Week of the 2013-14 season. As we’ve discussed in the past, teams are doing more fighting in the standings than they are on the ice as the season winds down. That’s not to say everyone is playing nice (they’re not), but it does mean that teams are trying to avoid instigating penalties and keep their players out on the ice.
With that in mind, here’s the five best fights from what was a fairly quiet week in the NHL as far as scraps are concerned.
5. Jay Rosehill (PHI) vs Shawn Thornton (BOS) – April 5
It starts slow – OK, really slow – but this one heats up at the end. Rosehill is the victor as Thornton is limited to only being able to throw weak punches as he clutches Rosehill’s sweater.
4. Krys Barch (FLA) vs Matt Carkner (NYI) – April 1
Carkner wins this one. Why? Because he actually threw some punches while Barch appeared content to just hug it out. We kind of feel guilty including this one – worse for ranking fourth – but alas, that should illustrate just how few fights there were to choose from.
3. Jarred Tinordi (MON) vs Eric Gryba (OTT) – April 4
Finally a good fight. Granted, most of the bombs thrown fail to connect, but at least Tinordi and Gryba go at it with some gusto. The ending is a bit anticlimactic, but Tinordi comes out on top despite the fact both men landed maybe a total of five punches throughout this entire altercation.
2. Patrick Maroon (ANA) vs Matt Hendricks (EDM) – April 6
Outstanding bout between Maroon and Hendricks. At one point the Edmonton forward is caught facing the wrong way, but he rebounds and lands some big blows before chucking Maroon down on the ice.
1. Matt Beleskey (ANA) vs Steve Pinizzotto (EDM) – April 6
Sticking with the Ducks and Oilers, Pinizzotto rocks Beleskey in a short, yet spirited scrap. We’re always a proponent of long hair in hockey because it always seems to make fights look that much cooler.
