Matt Martin has once again made NHL history. Back in 2011-12, Martin set an NHL record for most hits in a season with 374. That record didn’t stand long as Martin just surpassed it during his team’s 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.
With his second hit today, @MattyMarts17 now has 375 and has broken the NHL record set in 2011-12 by…@MattyMarts17. #Isles

Martin finished the game with a total of 377 hits on the year.
The Isles still have a handful of games left on their 2014-15 schedule, so Martin should be able to further distance his new record from his old 2011-12 record. Martin is averaging about five hits per game, so there’s a very real possibility he might break the 400-hit plateau.
Hits are an extremely subjective and debatable statistic, so feel free to take this record with a grain of salt. The various stat keepers around the league tabulate hits differently (check out the boxscores around the league and you’ll see) and there’s the issue that hits have never been proven to improve a team’s chances of winning. Still, Martin has proven he’s one of the absolute best when it comes to throwing his body around and he has the NHL record to prove it.
